Straight answers
It depends entirely on the job, a few downlights is a very different thing to wiring a garden, a summer house or a whole new lighting scheme. Tell Aled what you have in mind and he prices it straight, with a written quote so you know the number before he starts.
Yes. A garden room or summer house usually needs a properly designed sub-main from the house, run safely and certified, not an extension lead trailing across the lawn. Aled plans the cable route, the supply and the protection so it is safe, legal and tidy.
That is the whole point of planning the run before the drill comes out. Aled works out where cables go first so they disappear into walls and ceilings and the finish lasts, indoors and out.
Outdoor lighting has to be the right IP rating for being rained on and wired on suitably protected circuits. Aled uses outdoor-rated fittings and the correct protection so your security lights, bollards and garden spots keep working through a Welsh winter.
For anything wired into the mains, yes. A new outdoor circuit has to be designed, protected and certified by a competent electrician, and outside lights must be on RCD protection because they get wet. Plug-in low-voltage garden kits are fine to fit yourself, but anything fixed to the house or run across the garden is a job for a registered electrician.
Using fittings without a proper IP rating for the spot they are in, missing RCD protection, burying ordinary cable instead of armoured cable, and cheap fittings that corrode after one winter. Lights aimed at the neighbours' windows or the road cause problems too. Planning the layout and cable run before anything is dug avoids all of them.
It is not a job we would recommend doing yourself. Cutting into a ceiling means avoiding joists and hidden cables, keeping clearance from loft insulation and, in many ceilings, using fire-rated downlights so the ceiling still slows a fire. The new lights also need to be connected and tested properly. Aled fits downlights in kitchens, bathrooms and living rooms across Bridgend and the Vale.
Where the ceiling has a fire-resistance job to do, yes. Cutting a hole in the ceiling between two floors, or under a room in a flat, weakens it, and fire-rated downlights are designed to restore that protection. Aled checks which ceilings need them and fits the right type, so you are not paying for fire-rated fittings where they are not required.
Yes. Changing old halogen spots for LED fittings cuts the running cost and the heat in the ceiling. Older 12V spotlights often have transformers above the ceiling that do not work well with LED lamps, so Aled usually replaces the whole fitting rather than just the bulb, which stops flickering and early failures.
Yes. Aled fits PIR motion-sensor lights and dusk-to-dawn lights on driveways, doors, gardens and outbuildings, using outdoor-rated fittings on protected circuits. He sets the sensor angle and timer so the light comes on when someone approaches, not every time a car passes on the road.
