"Fuse board", "fusebox" and "consumer unit" all mean the same thing: the box that houses the protection for every circuit in your home. The exact price depends on the board you need and the condition of the existing wiring, which is why Aled asks a couple of quick questions, or takes a look at a photo of your current fusebox, before giving you a straight number rather than a vague "from".

Health check first
Before anything is quoted, Aled checks what you actually have: the age and type of the board, the state of the wiring feeding it, and whether your incoming supply and earthing are up to a modern unit. No point fitting a new board onto problems it cannot fix.

Isolate and remove
On the day, the supply is isolated safely and the old board comes out. You get a realistic timescale for being without power, kept as short as possible, and the work area is kept tidy throughout.

Fit the new 18th-edition unit
A modern consumer unit with full RCBO protection and surge protection where required, wired in, with circuits clearly identified rather than left to guesswork.

Test, certify and notify

Often, yes. An EV charger pulls a sustained, heavy load, and an older board without spare capacity or proper RCD protection may not cope safely. Aled checks the board free on every EV install, so if it does need doing you get one quote for both jobs in one visit.
An RCBO combines overload and earth-fault protection on one circuit. On a fully loaded RCBO board, a fault on one circuit trips only that circuit, instead of taking out half the house like an old split-load RCD board. It is the modern standard and what Aled fits.

Rarely. Boards under stairs, in garages, in lofts or high on a wall are all routine. If the position itself is unsafe or against current regs, Aled will tell you and talk through the options before any work starts.
Yes. Fuse board, fuse box and consumer unit all mean the box where your electricity is split into circuits and protected. Older ones use fuses you can rewire by hand. A modern consumer unit uses circuit breakers and RCD or RCBO protection, which cut the power in a fraction of a second if something goes wrong.
Usually, yes. Most homes in Bridgend and the Vale have wiring that is perfectly sound and only needs a modern board. The new board's RCD protection is far more sensitive, though, so Aled tests every circuit before he switches it on. If an old cable or fitting is leaking to earth, he shows you and prices the repair before going further.
Then it is a fault that was already there, hidden by the old board. Aled will not connect a circuit that is unsafe just to finish the job. He explains what he found, in plain English, and quotes to fix it. Often it is a single damaged cable or a faulty outside light, not a reason for a rewire.

The clearest signs are fuses you can rewire by hand, no RCD test button, scorch marks or a burning smell, a board that keeps tripping, or one more than about 25 to 30 years old. Not by law. Since January 2016 every newly fitted domestic consumer unit has to be metal, so that any fire caused by an overheating connection stays inside the box. An existing plastic board that was compliant when fitted can stay, and usually gets a C3, improvement recommended, on an EICR rather than a fail.
