No, you cannot legally install your own EV charger. Fitting one means running a new dedicated circuit from your consumer unit, and that makes it notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations. It has to be carried out by a registered competent person (or notified to building control) and properly certified. This is not a socket you swap over on a Saturday.
That is the legal answer. The practical answer is more important, because the reasons DIY is a bad idea are the ones that actually cost you money.
Why it is notifiable work
Part P covers electrical safety in dwellings. Adding a new circuit to a consumer unit is on the notifiable list, and an EV charger is always a new circuit, because it pulls a heavy, sustained load for hours at a time and needs its own protection.
That means the installation must be:
- Carried out by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme (Renovolt is NAPIT registered), who can self-certify, or notified to building control in advance and inspected
- Tested and certified on completion, with the paperwork issued to you
- Protected correctly for a high, continuous load, which is not the same as a normal ring main
What DIY actually costs you
People assume the risk is just “it might not work.” It is worse than that:
- No certificate. When you come to sell, a solicitor or a buyer’s surveyor asks for the installation certificate for the EV charger. You do not have one. That is a problem in the middle of a sale.
- Insurance. If there is a fire and the installation was not certified, your home insurer has a very straightforward reason to decline the claim. An EV charger is exactly the kind of high-load circuit they will look at.
- Void warranty. Nearly every charger manufacturer voids the warranty unless it was fitted by an approved or registered installer. A DIY install can turn a £900 problem into an £1,800 one.
- Genuine danger. This is a circuit drawing 32 amps for six or seven hours at a stretch, often outdoors in the rain. Undersized cable, poor earthing or the wrong protection is not a nuisance trip, it is a fire.
What a proper install actually includes

Two things decide whether a charger drops straight in or needs work first:
- Your consumer unit needs a spare way and the right protection. Many do. Some do not.
- Your main service fuse, supplied by the network operator, has to be rated high enough for the charger on top of everything else in the house. Plenty of older South Wales homes are still on a 60 or 80 amp supply, and that is the real constraint far more often than the board.
If your board is fine, the charger goes in from £900. If it genuinely needs upgrading, that starts from £700 and you will have both figures before you decide. What about a granny cable, is that DIY?
A three-pin “granny” charger that plugs into a normal socket is not an installation, so it is not notifiable. But it is a slow trickle charge, and running 10 amps for twelve hours through a standard socket that was never designed for a sustained load is exactly how sockets overheat. It is a get-you-home option, not a solution. If you own the car, fit the charger properly.
